This year, the team behind the German Sustainability Award honours companies that have successfully embarked on the long, complex path towards sustainability. Troldtekt is among the nominees competing for the prestigious awards, which will be presented at a ceremony in Düsseldorf on 28 November.

"It’s a big pat on the back for our efforts that we’ve passed through the eye of the needle and into the list of nominees. We're proud of this, and it shows that we're onto something important and right with our persistent strategy," says Tina Snedker Kristensen, Head of Sustainability and Communications at Troldtekt.

Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e.V. (German Sustainability Award Foundation) awards prizes in co-operation with the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the WWF.

zzPwC Deutschland and the Centre for Sustainable Management (CSM) at Leuphana University Lüneburg helped select the nominees in the corporate category. Troldtekt is included in the field of 'Bau und Immobilien' (construction and property) and more specifically in the sub-category 'Zement, Beton und Baumaterialien' (cement, concrete and building materials).

Concrete initiatives motivated the nomination

The focal point of Troldtekt’s efforts is the Cradle to Cradle design concept. The entire Troldtekt range of cement-bonded wood wool products is Cradle to Cradle Certified® at gold level.

As early as 2012, Troldtekt chose to base its business strategy on the circular Cradle to Cradle principles. This has since resulted in a number of concrete initiatives that have had a major effect on both the business and customers.

The team behind the German Sustainability Award justifies Troldtekt 's nomination with the following:

  • that the acoustic panels are Cradle to Cradle Certified® and contribute to leading building certifications.
  • that all the wood in the acoustic panels is certified according to leading standards for responsible forestry (FSC® C115450 and PEFC).
  • that Troldtekt shows a strong commitment to environmental and social responsibility with annual CSR reports and environmental product declarations (EPDs) for the each product.
  • that Troldtekt optimises the product’s life cycle in order to minimise its environmental impact and increase resource efficiency. An example is the launch of acoustic panels based on the carbon-reduced cement type FUTURECEM™.

Previous winner of a product award

Troldtekt panels based on FUTURECEM were honoured at the German Sustainability Award 2023. The solution was the winner in the 'Design' category.

“The new acoustic panels from Troldtekt are impressive with a carbon footprint of 30% in comparison to similar products,” said the jury at the time.

Specifically, Troldtekt FUTURECEM products have a carbon footprint 26 and 38 per cent lower over their respective lifecycles than Troldtekt panels based on grey and white cement, respectively. As of 2024, Troldtekt has completely phased out the use of traditional grey cement in favour of FUTURECEM.
