A stage at the heart of a new recreational landscape
Situated right on the edge of the woods south of Aarhus, Tivoli Friheden is a popular place to hear live music, particularly the ‘Fed Fredag’ open-air concerts that are held on Fridays to kick-off the weekend. The stage has now been nominated for the ‘Byens Bedste Scene’ – best stage in Aarhus – award presented by the local newspaper Århus Stiftstidende.
The new stage, with space for even more music-loving Tivoli-goers, was inaugurated in May 2022 with Danish singer-songwriter Tina Dickow behind the microphone and the woods as a backdrop. The project is part of a large landscaping plan that will see the lakes at the Tivoli Friheden amusement park connected by a stream to create a large recreational and green environment.
The stage is located in a round building that also houses the Madscenen and Backstage restaurants, in addition to kitchens, an administration office, technical facilities and backstage facilities. Seated in either of the two restaurants, you are surrounded by greenery in a room with high ceilings and a welcoming atmosphere.
The colour scheme and decor add a sense of lightness to the venue and to the building as a whole. Grey Troldtekt acoustic panels on the ceilings in Madscenen and Backstage helps to ensure superior acoustics and thus a pleasant dining experience.
Beautifully framed stage
Honest materials are used throughout the building and, as the architects intended, they imbue the venue with character. Black Troldtekt acoustic panels are installed around the entire stage, primarily for their sound-absorbing properties. The round building is encircled by a light and transparent perforated steel facade which, while shielding the upper floors, rises above the balconies and frames the stage.
Like a large stage curtain, the facade rises up where necessary to accommodate various functions, while elegantly linking together the building’s attractions. Convex curves between the columns create a gentle rhythm and accentuate the building’s geometry while adding a playful element to reflect Tivoli’s design idiom.
