ObelHus - a harmonious synthesis of past and present

Aalborg (Denmark) is known for its well-maintained industrial buildings and transformations of this type of building culture. Now the city can unveil another example of a successful transformation.

Starting in 1938, tobacco products were manufactured in the building, and from 1995, engineering students were educated in the same settings. The three floors have been transformed again and are now a total of 65 exciting homes, which are also Nordic Swan Ecolabelled. In many ways, it is a wonderful story about the preservation of a heritage building worthy of conservation and the construction of homes with a lower climate impact. The project for which HP Byg is the turnkey contractor is the first Nordic Swan Ecolabelled renovation project in Jutland (Denmark).  

"The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is concerned with low energy requirements and a good indoor climate and there are requirements for condition assessments, resource and waste management and recycling," explains HP Byg in the description of the project. The project is characterised by a high degree of recycling by reusing not only the shell, but also older building elements such as ceiling panels and doors. 

Special residences

C.F. Møller Architects has made the most of the building’s architectural potential and emphasised the exposed concrete columns and beams in the new ObelHus. A common feature of the three floors is that all of the residences have plenty of daylight, balconies and visible structures. On the top floor, the apartments have an extra, recessed floor and skylights, making them truly special. Troldtekt based on FUTURECEM is used in all the residences for good acoustics, which can be particularly necessary in high-ceilinged rooms. Troldtekt is a product approved for Nordic Swan Ecolabelled construction. Troldtekt based on FUTURECEM is a type of panel in which some of the cement is replaced with clay, making the panel less carbon-heavy, even when painted.

Troldtekt is also used in the corridors, which stand out with a colour scheme for the entrance areas, just as the original staircases have been provided with colour and sound absorption.
