Multi-purpose building with considered details
At Aalborg Barracks, several functions are combined into a single construction called the multi-building. It gives logistical advantages in everyday life at the barracks, but is also part of the Danish Defence's 'Green Establishment'.
The new building contains functions for the Military Police and workshops for the Danish Defence's Maintenance Service. More specifically, these are garages under a single roof used as staff facilities, depots, offices and teaching rooms. Previously, the different functions were spread across multiple buildings, which was time-consuming and inefficient on many levels. Employees at the barracks consider the multi-building to be very functional, but there is also space for a small roof terrace with views of the open countryside and break rooms with kitchenettes decorated with greenery on both walls and a plant wall with skylights.
Troldtekt sound-absorbing panels are used on all ceilings. They have slightly different looks depending on the room they are placed in. In the garages, natural wood was chosen, which has a warm colour. In the other spaces, white ceilings were selected, some with visible strips in between.
A win-win situation
Aalborg Barracks has chosen to make the new building a pilot project that will contribute to a new sustainable strategy for the Danish Defence, also known as 'Green Establishments'. The aim is to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. In order to work concretely with these goals, the project has been enrolled in the Voluntary Sustainability Standard. Therefore, the focus is on issues such as life cycle analysis, resource utilisation on the building site, indoor climate and awareness of problematic substances.
Optimising the barracks’ energy and climate conditions can save resources. Additionally, more sustainable operations are cheaper for both the environment and the Barracks. As a result, the Barracks have a building that saves time, effort and CO2 for the benefit of both employees and the climate.
