Hall with a special eye-catcher
In the town of Engen, Baden-Württemberg, a modern sports hall has been created that focuses on sport and movement, both indoors and outdoors. Room acoustics and design considerations were taken into account in the process.
The people in Engen in the district of Constance in Baden-Württemberg are delighted with the impressive 22 by 44 metre-large double sports hall building on Jahnstrasse. With a usable area of 1,600 square metres, it offers plenty of space and great opportunities for local clubs and school sports. Located directly on the street and at a convenient distance from the cemetery and residential development, the modern new build has sufficient parking spaces, which can be reached via a specially built slip road.
Imposing façade
From the outside, the accessible hall impresses as a dynamic solid building with full-surface glazing on the north side, which is broken up with various geometric structural elements in the form of grid-like, slanted support elements and posts and is partially green. Based on an idea from city planner Matthias Distler, two large, three-dimensional images of athletes also adorn the side façades of the new building as a special eye-catcher. The artistically impressive, illuminated sports figures designed by Mansa Sabaghian symbolise dynamics and movement and create a beautiful contrast to the calm side façade.
Colourful accents on the acoustic ceiling
Inside the hall, which is flooded with light thanks to the glass façade, technical, equipment and accessible changing rooms with sanitary facilities are divided into a total of two spacious levels. Guests have a clear view of the pitch from a gallery. A large grandstand was deliberately omitted during planning, as there is another large sports hall just 300 metres away.
To create optimal conditions in terms of reverberation times and speech comprehension for teachers and pupils, even when the hall is fully occupied or multiple classes are being held, Troldtekt acoustic ceiling panels were installed. Thanks to the material’s good absorption properties, the required reverberation time for sports halls was achieved, despite the enormous ceiling height and the sound-reflecting wall surfaces. The ceiling, which is predominantly fitted with white acoustic panels, is accentuated by individual coloured panels.
